The Wellness Routines Behind the World's Most Disciplined Women
What does it actually take to prepare your mind and body for the world's most demanding stage? We spoke with coaches, nutritionists, and titleholders to find out.
There is a version of the story people tell about pageant preparation that involves crash diets, sleepless nights, and relentless physical pressure. The truth β at least among the women who compete at the Miss Universe level today β looks very different.
Modern contestants and their preparation teams have embraced a holistic model of wellness that prioritizes longevity over aesthetics, mental resilience over surface-level performance. The result is a preparation philosophy that elite athletes, executives, and wellness professionals would recognize immediately.
Sleep as Strategy
Multiple preparation coaches and former titleholders cite sleep as the non-negotiable foundation of their routines. "You cannot perform at 4 AM rehearsals, handle back-to-back interviews, and stay emotionally grounded on five hours of sleep," says wellness coach Valeria Montoya, who has worked with contestants from four countries. Her clients aim for 8β9 hours, with consistent sleep and wake times even during competition weeks.
Nutrition Without Deprivation
The era of extreme restriction is over β or should be. Top nutritionists working with Miss Universe-level competitors now build plans around anti-inflammatory whole foods, adequate protein for muscle recovery, and enough caloric density to fuel 14-hour competition days. "We are fueling performance," says sports dietitian Dr. Ana Lima. "Not manufacturing an appearance."
Mental Training Is Non-Negotiable
Perhaps the most significant shift in preparation culture is the normalization of mental health work. Visualization, breathwork, therapy, and mindfulness practices are standard in elite preparation programs. The ability to regulate anxiety on command β to walk onto a stage in front of 800 million viewers and feel grounded β does not happen by accident.
Universe Media will continue to document these practices as part of our commitment to covering the full picture of women's excellence.
